2021-11-04, MTB, High Yewdale, Wrynose, Walna Scar

An epic traversal of Walna Scar road. Starting from High Yewdale, just off the A593, and heading north towards Hodge Close. Initially on tarmac alongside an attractive stream and then onto a bridleway through pretty woodland to Hodge Close. The track then leads to Little Langdale. Turning west there are some interesting sections before it joins the minor road that becomes the Wrynose Pass. The road quickly becomes steep but is straightforward. The descent is a good test of the brakes and with caution as there were wet sections and entirely in the shade, hence very cold and with the risk of ice. After Cockley Beck there's a short incline before the Hard Knott pass truly begins, leading to the start of rarely used bridleway that follows the west side of the river Duddon. An ideal place for a lunch break is Birks Bridge. Onto the minor road that leads down through Dunnerdale the turning to the east leads to the start of the Walna Scar road. It's a long hard climb, especially tough at the start. After the fork, where there's a bridleway heading south through abandoned quarries, is a good place for a break before the long but simpler climb up to the ridge of Walna Scar. The descent varies between technical switchbacks and more straightforward sections. With great views to the east all the way down; Coniston Lake, the Pennines and Morecambe bay. The track becomes easier as it approaches the car park at the end of the tarmac road from Coniston (very steep near the bottom). From the village there's an easy bridleway through the woods back to the starting point.
