2021-10-15, MTB, Grizedale, Nibthwaite, Claife Heights

Another cracking ride in southern Lakeland with superb weather. Starting at Moor Top not far from Hawkshead and going in an anti-clockwise loop. Beginning with a section of the purpose built 'North Face Trail' in Grizedale Forest then across Bethecar Moor to Parkamoor for the most spectacular view of Coniston Water, the Old Man of Coniston and the surrounding mountains. The descent from Parkamoor is legendary with superb views most of the way down and some interesting sections on the way. After Nibthwaite Grange the route goes to the east and after an initial climb on tarmac, the track across the moor and down to Ickenthwaite is a delight. From there a quiet road continues until the forest is entered again to reach Satterthwaite. Climbing into Breasty Haw there is plenty of singletrack and some interesting descents. The last bridleway through the forest also has a challenging descent to reach a minor road not far from the end of Esthwaite Water. The last main section is a gentle climb onto Claife Heights before dropping down to Colthouse and Hawkshead. The tarmac return to Moor Top is steep and finishes off any reserves of energy.
